You’re laughing? I find this hard to believe, since they have already won the Pulitzer Prize in 1992. Maus, the autobiographical work from Art Spiegelman, is a gripping, tragic and often humorous account of his father’s experiences during World War 2 and the way it shaped his world opinion thereafter.

But this post isn’t about Maus. It is about comic books as a whole, and how they encourage reading in children.

It has long been speculated that children don’t benefit from looking at comics. Is that misconception now a thing of the past? Professor Carol Tilley thinks so.

“A lot of the criticism of comics and comic books come from people who think that kids are just looking at the pictures and not putting them together with the words,” said Tilly. “But you could easily make some of the same criticisms of picture books – that kids are just looking at pictures, and not at the words.”

I have enjoyed reading from an early age, and while I can’t contribute that to comic books, I can safely say that they were one of the factors to interest me in art.

To learn more about why comic books are good for your children, and how they instill a love of reading you can read the full article: Comic books are good for children’s learning
